We cordially invite you to participate in JU’s annual Off the Shelf Poetry Event.
This year we will be celebrating National Poetry Month & School Library Month!
What is National Poetry Month?
Inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is now held every April, when publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, schools and poets around the country band together to celebrate poetry and its vital place in American culture. Thousands of businesses and non-profit organizations participate through readings, festivals, book displays, workshops, and other events.

What is School Library Month?
School Library Month (SLM) is the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in a student's educational career.

We welcome readers, performers, and listeners. Participants will be given five minutes (or more if time allows) at an open mike*. The event is not limited to poetry. Short skits, music, mime, stand-up comedy, etc. is welcomed. A Hamlet preview is in the offing!
From 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm we will be providing a repast fit for a king (of sorts). Many thanks to TRIO Student Support Services for their generous contributions to the feast!
Ten lucky participants will receive a free copy of POETRY Magazine. These copies were donated to Jacksonville University by POETRY Magazine to help us honor the written word in its many formats.
